Cup woe at double for Wids

-

WITH Widnes’s first XV out of action, it fell on both the seconds and thirds to take centre stage in their respective cup competitions.

Sadly, though, it ended in disappointment for both sides as they fell at the semi-final stage.

In the Lighting & Services Bowl, the seconds lost 30-20 at Penrith whilst in the Lighting & Services Plate, the Thirds lost 31-14 at Garstang.

Both teams still have plenty to play for in their respective leagues where they both sit proudly at the top of their divisions and promotion is there to be had. ● WIDNES’S first-team go to Wirral on Saturday to face Anselmians at Malone Field.

Anselmians struggled in the first half of the season, but three wins in January followed by an outstanding victory against Bowdon at the beginning of this month has lifted them away from the drop zone and up into 11th place.

Widnes will be buoyed by their most recent victory against New Brighton, and although they handed their opponents a big defeat back in November, this is sure to be a tough battle.

The Heath Road outfit will also not need reminding of the last times these two teams met there back in 2012.

That day, Anselmians were bottom of the pile whilst Widnes were sitting pretty at the top – but the Wirral outfit won 42-25.

Saturday’s match kicks-off at 3pm.
