Scouts prepare for Arctic adventure

EIGHT young adventurers from Runcorn and Widnes have been picked to head to the Arctic Circle and attend the world’s northernmost Jamboree in Norway.
They are among 26 Mersey Weaver Scouts on fundraising mission to head to Bodø for the trip of a lifetime where they will spend the second week living with a Norwegian host family.
Their youngest member is Jess Pickstock, 11, of Runcorn.
The group – made up of 12-to18-year-olds from Runcorn, Widnes, Frodsham, Helsby, Norley, Ince and Elton – underwent a tough selection process including a day of challenges in which they were assessed on team working capabilities, personal skill tests, group and individual presentations and interviews. As well as thousands of Scouts from across Norway and Scandinavia, participants will be joining contingents from as far away as the Australia, USA, Netherlands and Hong Kong.
They will meet Scouts from other countries and learn about their cultures, make friends and maybe even swap badges, as well as participate in activities such as midnight hikes.
A key aspect of the expedition is that those taking part must raise all of the funds themselves, equating to a total £35,000 target in just eight months.
Within days of learning they had been picked, the Scouts, Explorers and their families along with expedition leaders, were fully immersed in fundraising for the trip.
From bag packs and tombolas, to running stalls at Christmas markets, sponsored zip wire challenges and cleaning cars, the group has worked relentlessly. More events are on the way. Michelle Pickstock, of Mersey Weaver Scouts parent fundraiser, said: “With less than three months to go until the expedition and with £11,000 left to raise, the coming weeks are crammed with further fundraising events – a group of Scouts will be swimming the distance of the English Channel, a family fun day has been arranged, a sponsored climb of Snowdon is planned and a Battle Of The Bands event has been organised.
“The group is also seeking sponsorship and donations from both individuals and local businesses.
“Several fantastic sponsorship opportunities are available including T-shirt and kit sponsor, both of which would prominently the sponsor’s name and logo.”
She added: “Situated at 67 degrees north, above the Arctic Circle with beautiful mountain views.
“Bodø is the capital of Nordland county and is surrounded by some of the most pristine wilderness in Norway including 17 nature reserves. In the summer weeks, the sun never sets, providing a unique light, day and night!”
Oliver Chambers, expedition leader, said: “Our young people will be able to gain confidence through being moved out of their comfort zone, trying new foods and customs, learning some of the language and making lifelong friends from across the globe.”
