Watch out for thieves as days go longer

-

HOUSEHOLDERS in Halton have been urged to be extra-vigilant and adapt as the days become longer and the evenings lighter.

Cheshire police said residents should follow simple security tips to protect their home, bike and vehicle security.

A spokeswoman said they should: ● Make sure any replacement doors and windows are certified to British Standard BS7950 for windows or PAS 24-1 for doors. ● Fit mortice locks, Kitemarked BS3621, to all front and back doors and locks to all downstairs windows or windows which are easy to reach ● Keep house and car keys safe and away from doors and windows. ● Fit a burglar alarm and ensure it is installed properly and works. ● Keep garages and garden sheds locked with proper security locks, and keep tools secure and out of sight. ● Trim back any plants or hedges that a burglar could hide behind. ● Make sure of up-to-date home insurance.

Superintendent Peter Crowcroft, who heads the constabulary’s local policing units, said: “As we head towards the summer months with lighter nights it can leave property more vulnerable to opportunists looking to take advantage.

“Thieves will be on the look-out for any lapses in security, so it is important that people do all they can to protect both their home and their possessions.

“I would urge everyone to ensure that windows and doors are closed and locked and that personal items such as bikes and other equipment are stored away out of sight.

“The same applies to valuable items stored away in garages or sheds – ensure that garages and sheds are locked with strong padlocks and, ideally, fitted with an alarm.”

Supt Crowcroft added: “We need the continued support of the local community and we would urge residents to remain vigilant as we head into the warmer months and to report any suspicious behaviour or activity in their area immediately.”

Anyone with any information about this type of crime is urged to call Cheshire police on 101. Information can be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
