Man arrested after assault
AN 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent in connection with a serious assault on a cyclist in Runcorn.
The teenager was released under investigation pending further enquiries.
He was arrested on suspicion of Section 20 assault just after 8.30am on Wednesday, April 27.
Cheshire Constabulary said two boys, aged 15 and 16, were interviewed under caution after attending Runcorn Police Station voluntarily.
The younger teenagers were not arrested.
The investigation followed a serious assault on Whitchurch Way in Halton Lodge at about 8.30pm on Thursday, April 6, in which a 39-year-old cyclist suffered a serious head injury requiring hospital treatment.
It is alleged he was struck to the head with a bike seat after an altercation ensued when he encountered a group of youths while visiting Halton Lodge shops.
The incident caused alarm among residents and prompted police to impose a dispersal order around the ● estate’s neighbourhood centre to prevent teenagers congregating.
Investigators are still keen to hear from witnesses.
Detective Inspector Clare Coleman said: “I would like to thank the local community for all of the support and information that they have provided in relation to this case, which has resulted in today’s arrest.
“While this arrest has taken place, our investigation remains ongoing and I would encourage anyone with any information about the incident to contact the team here at Runcorn.”
