CATERING students at Riverside College have been introduced to outdoor survival skills and a potential career during an inter-college Army challenge at Fulwood Barracks in Preston.

The young chefs watched outdoor cookery demonstrations by 167 Catering Support Regiment of the Royal Logistic Corps (RLC).

The students then watched how ration packs could be used to make tasty dishes, created with techniques used by the British Army all over the world, including cooking with emergency improvised ovens and fire pits.

They then had the chance to test their baking, roasting and simmering skills by recreating the dishes using a special field kitchen set up for the event.

The finished dishes were judged by Army staff at the event, before being presented to charities and homeless shelters, including The Foxton Centre in Preston.

Riverside’s group also took part in fun team building exercises and demonstrations of survival skills when out in the field such as sleeping, eating and camp guarding.

They were also introduced to new possible career pathways within the British Army.

Stephen Parkinson, Riverside College’s programme area leader for catering and hospitality, said: “It was a great day at Fulwood Barracks, our students had a great time and they picked up many new skills which will help them with their college courses.

“They also got to experience working in a team and under pressured conditions, which are all valuable qualities they will need when working in busy catering and hospitality environments in the future.

“We look forward to taking part in future events with 167 Catering Support Regiment RLC.”
