VIKINGS IN THE COMMUNITY

ACHARITY initiative by Widnes Vikings will involve players taking to the field at the Dacia Magic Weekend in a special playing kit.

The Vikings are teaming up with the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation for the third year in a row.

The club and its supporters have raised more than £60,000 for the cancer research charity over the last two years.

The Magic Weekend will take place at St James’ Park in Newcastle.

A new shirt produced by O’Neills Irish Sportswear carries the traditional Widnes colours of black and white with an uncanny Geordie feel to it.

Main club partner Play Casino Games have kindly vacated their front of shirt position to allow the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation to take pride of place at rugby league’s showcase weekend.

Transport giant Stobart, who are fantastic supporters of the charity, will be prominent on the reverse of the jersey.

Vikings director Brian O’Connor said: “It is fantastic that for a third year, the Vikings will feel more than at home when they take to the field at St James’ Park.

“I think that our members and supporters are still immensely proud, not only to take to the streets of Newcastle in black and white stripes, but to support such a fantastic cause in the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

“I have seen firsthand the work that they carry out both in the treatment and support given to cancer patients and in the research and developments that they help fund both nationally and internationally.

“I hope that our Members and the North East public will once again support the shirt initiative and our 2017 Destination Magic campaign which is providing the delivery of the match ball for the opening game of what will no doubt be a fantastic weekend of Rugby League.”

The 2017 Magic Weekend kit and the Destination Magic ball went on sale from the Vikings Superstore from 9am on Saturday, April 29, with a donation not only being gifted to the Foundation but also matched by O’Neills Irish Sportswear.

Liz Luff from the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation said: “We’re so proud to receive support from Widnes Vikings and their fans.

“It’s very appropriate that a team playing in Magic Weekend at St James’ Park should be playing in black and white stripes. It’s something the Geordie public appreciate.

“And it’s wonderful that Widnes will also be wearing our logo on their shirts once again.

“Sir Bobby’s family come to Magic Weekend in Newcastle every year and it means a lot to them. We’re very grateful to everyone who has helped make this happen.”
