D-day is close for registration
TIME is running out to vote in the General Election and Halton residents have been urged to make sure they are registered in time.
The deadline to sign up to be able to take part is midnight on Monday, May 22.
Voters in the constituencies of Halton covering Widnes, much of Runcorn and Hale, and Weaver Vale, encompassing much of east Runcorn, Daresbury and Frodsham, will head to the polls on Thursday, June 8, to choose their members of Parliament.
Those unable to vote in person and apply for a postal or proxy vote and will have longer to register.
Postal voters have until 5pm on Tuesday, May 23, to register and proxy voters, who opt to have someone cast their ballot for them, have until 5pm on Wednesday, May 31.
A Halton Borough Council electoral registration office spokeswoman said: “The General Election registration deadline is fast approaching. With just a week or so to go we urge everyone in Halton to register to vote by the May 22 deadline to ensure that their voice is heard on Thursday, June 8.
“This election is an opportunity to have your say on who will represent the people of the borough at a national level.
“We don’t want anyone to miss out on this opportunity.”
Emma Hartley, Electoral Commission head of campaigns, said: “Our research indicates that recent home movers in particular are less likely to be registered to vote.
“Often people think that applying to pay council tax means you are added to the electoral register too, but that is not the case.
“If you’ve moved house in the past few months make sure you take five minutes and go online to register to vote now.”
Anyone not registered to vote at the address they now live in can register online at www.gov.uk/registertovote
