Voluntary groups join markets event

-

WIDNES and Runcorn markets are opening up to voluntary organisations to mark this year’s Love Your Local Market fortnight.

To mark the national celebration of shoppers’ favourite stalls and stallholders, charities and other groups are on hand from Wednesday, May 17, to Wednesday, May 31, to offer free advice to residents, plus there is the chance to join clubs such as Halton Heritage or even find employment as a carer or through Halton Peo- ● ple Into Jobs.

In addition, organisations will be available to advise on deafness, health awareness, foodbank access, cancer care and general healthcare.

A spokesman for Halton Borough Council, which manages the towns’ main two venues, said more shoppers are turning to markets.

He said that in 2016, Widnes traders were subject to a mystery shop in which most stallholders were awarded the gold standard for customer service and area knowledge.

Ian Goodall, Halton markets manager, said: “Widnes and Runcorn markets have been the cornerstone of trading in the towns for many years.

“Widnes, now in its 142nd year, celebrates the National campaign Love Your Local Market by opening its doors to many of the local voluntary organisations which make such a different in the area.

“Some will also attend Runcorn Outdoor Market on Tuesday.”
