Hornets’ cloud nine in the cup

Leigh Miners 6 HFH Open Age 48 HORNETS progressed to the next round of the NWML Cup with a convincing nine-try performance at Leigh Miners.

The home side failed to get to grips with the pace and power of the Hornets side who had the game won after just 20 minutes.

An early try by Nathan Lyon opened the floodgates and he was soon followed by Gavin Conroy with two and singles from Matty Barrow and Alex Smith.

Konnagh Hill added three conversions to open up a 26-0 lead.

Skipper Danny Mellor added another score to put Hornets 30 points ahead at half-time.

Leigh Miners had their only success early in the second half with a converted try but a 70 metre interception from Lyon restored the gap before Conroy completed his hat-trick.

Adam Middleton rounded-off the scoring with a well-taken try and Hill converted all three second half tries.

HFH U13 18 Hindley 0 HALTON had to work hard for the victory against a very fast and physical Hindley side.

Halton started fast as Harry Keeley showed very good footwork to step through and score under the posts.

Hornets had to defend well for long spells but very good and committed defence kept the dangerous Hindley side from scoring to make it 6-0 at half-time.

A good team-talk and Halton were again quick out the blocks as they constantly made good yards and found plenty of gaps in the Hindley defence. Joe Riley was put into space and finished well in the corner for the first try of the period, before Lewis Hughes passed a great long ball to Liam Hurley who finished well in the corner. With Hornets now well on top, Hughes jinked through to score and make it 18-0 to the Hornets who booked a place in the semi-final.

Man-of-the-match Charlie Glover kicked one goal and put lots of big tackles in throughout the game to really catch the eye. The opposition’s choice for man-of-thematch Ben Lane was a constant threat and went close to scoring on a couple of occasions.
