Former pupils meet up for half-century reunion

-

AREUNION took place for pupils who attended a Runcorn school almost 50 years ago.

Ladies who went to Balfour Road Girls School from 1958 to 1962 gathered on Wednesday, May 10, with many of them now having celebrated their 70th birthdays.

The event was approximately a year in the planning to ensure as many as possible kept the date free in their diaries.

It required locating girls who had moved as far afield as Dorset, Essex, North Wales and the Isle Of Man.

A total of 32 attended and Nick Broome, manager of the Helter Skelter pub and restaurant in Frodsham, agreed to close the venue for the evening.

It allowed the event to take ● place there as it had in 2002 when the girls were 55.

This time it was attended by some who had not been seen since they left school in 1962.

A substantial buffet was provided at a small charge per person.

One of the ex-pupils, Diane Fisher, made a celebration cake decorated in the style of the school’s badge including detail of house colours.

After the buffet a toast of prosecco was drunk with a slice of cake to mark the occasion.

A wonderful evening was had by all, catching up with each others’ lives and reminiscing about long ago school days.

A souvenir photograph of the evening was taken by Simon le Couteur, a relative of one of the group.
