-

● TRAILBLAZERS setting the pace for encouraging residents to live healthier lives across Widnes and Runcorn have been presented with gongs in the borough’s annual Get Active awards.

John Timms, 76, of Runcorn, scooped the title of Volunteer Of The Year for his contribution leading walks to support others.

Recently he helped Murdishaw Health Centre implement a GP health walk referral scheme with help from Paula Parle, of Halton Borough Council.

As part of this he spent time assessing suitable routes and now leads walks for patients, taking time to sit and have a cup of tea or coffee and chat with patients in the health centre.

He was presented with his award by the thenmayor Ged Philbin.

A Get Active spokesman said: “Mr Timms is dedicated to bringing pleasure to other’s lives and boosting their health and wellbeing.” ● William ‘Bill’ Littler, aged 68, of Widnes, from Zumba Gold class was presented with Participant Of The Year.

William ‘Bill’ Littler, 68, of Widnes, who attends a Zumba Gold class, was named Participant Of The Year.

An awards spokesman said Bill had various health problems and went along to a Zumba Gold class despite being a bit nervous.

Within a short space of time he lost weight, improved his overall health and encouraged his wife to join the class.

He made many friends, laughed a lot and grew in confidence.

He lost more than three stone and now helps out in the class, according to fellow attendees.

Paula Paule, scheme coordinator, said: “These two people have made a remarkable contribution and inspired others to keep on their exercise regimes.”
