Firsts will aim to strike back after Hale Barns loss

-

● RUNCORN Cricket Club’s first XI missed out in their final clash in May when they went down to a four-wickets loss to Hale Barns last Saturday afternoon at Brooks Drive.

Captain James Wells and his side have struggled to gain consistency this season and it showed on the weekend as they were unable to follow up a strong batting performance.

Runcorn posted 182-9 with the bat but they could not find a way to break through the home side’s second-wicket partnership.

Chris Colley and Mike Hunter were able to put on a stand of 88 for Hale Barns as Jordan Grobbelaar, Mathew Tyrrell, Dan Booth and David McNamara all worked tirelessly but without much luck to try and pick up wickets.

Grobbelaar was Runcorn’s most successful bowler as he picked up 3-42 but overall, it was a disappointing defeat for Wells’s side.

Runcorn’s start to the season hasn’t gone too smoothly as they’ve picked up just two wins out of their first six games.

However, there have been plenty of positive signs for Wells and his side to work on and they will look to bounce back on Saturday with a victory.

They won’t have an easy game, though, as they take on in-form side Ashton-on-Mersey this Saturday afternoon in what promises to be a tough encounter.

Runcorn’s opponents have not lost a match since the opening weekend of the season and they go into the clash on the back of two comfortable victories over Middlewich and Barnton.
