Advice on cycle security

-

TIPS have been issued by police to help residents improve their bicycle security.

A Cheshire police alert has offered the advice.

The message sent out by PCSO Caroline Griffiths, from Widnes Local Policing Unit, said most cycles have a frame number which can be registered online as an identifiable mark for free.

It said: “A photo of your cycle including the frame number is a great idea and will greatly increase the chances of a cycle being recovered and can be added to the property register.”

Residents are also advised to use ‘rated, quality’ locks for peace of mind and to consider using two different types due to thieves rarely carrying tools to break both.

The message said: “D locks are harder to cut, but only if the metal is hardened steel.

“Chains need to be substantial, thick and made from hardened steel to provide reasonable protection.

“You should look for locks which have been tested against attack.”

Cyclists are also being advised to keep their bike out of sight and in a secure building, and if placing it in a shed to check its security.

General advice given includes locking a bike every time it is left, to lock it to something solid in a place which is visible and busy, to take extra care in urban areas, and to ask cycle dealers for extra tips.
