Artwork challenges people’s perception of homelessness
R● ESIDENTS of two homeless hostels in Halton have teamed up with artists to create a series of pieces aimed at challenging people’s perceptions of homelessness and the issues surrounding it.
The Hostel Stories initiative has enabled those at Halton Lodge in Runcorn and Brennan Lodge in Widnes to develop new skills, gain confidence and tell their story using the medium.
Artists at Hazlehurst Studios in Runcorn have led weekly sessions at the hostels since May and will be launching a tour with an exhibition at their Pop-up High Street Garden, followed by exhibitions at The Studio and Butterfly House in Widnes later this month. ● Artwork created by the residents
The events are open to everyone to attend, alongside residents’ artwork, we will be providing home-made food and drinks, live music, stalls and arty activities for people to take part in.
The project is being funded by the Big Lottery Fund as part of their Awards for All grants program.
Hazlehurst Studios artistic lead Claire Pitt said: “Visiting the hostels and working alongside residents has really opened my eyes to the unique stories of people living there, the challenges they have faced and their strength of character.
“I have enjoyed seeing people step out of their usual routines, and in small ways projecting their own sense of self.”
The tour will kick off at Hazlehurst Gardens on High Street in Runcorn on Saturday, July 8.
It will then head to The Studio on Lacey Street in Widnes on Saturday, July 15, before going to the Butterfly House in Victoria Park on Saturday, July 29.
All events will be held from 12pm to 3pm.
