AWIDNES school has been shortlisted at the Education Business Awards.

Ormiston Chadwick Academy (OCA) has been shortlisted in the Outstanding Progress category and for the School Procurement Award.

Since opening in 2014 under the sponsorship of Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT), it has been deemed ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Teaching and learning at the academy was also the subject of high praise, with the inspectors recognising that ‘the quality of teaching, learning and assessment is outstanding’.

The significant improvements alongside a new, comprehensive curriculum, have been reflected in the academy’s results over the past two years.

Last summer, students achieved record GCSE results, with 69% attaining A*-C grades in English and maths, well above the national average.

The results have led to OCA being ranked as the fifth highest performing school in the North West, and within the top 100 secondary schools nationally.

The Outstanding Progress award aims to recognise the UK secondary school which has made outstanding progress in the management of its facilities, finances, human resources and also demonstrates an increase in educational performance.

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in London at The Grange St Paul’s Hotel on Thursday, July 6.

OCA principal Tuesday Humby said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this prestigious national award, it is brilliant to see the hard work of all of our staff and pupils, and their contribu- tion to the academy’s success being recognised.

“We have had a fantastic year, being named Top 100 in the country, Ofsted rated ‘outstanding’ and receiving a number of award short listings – I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved and would like to thank everyone who made this possible.”

OAT interim chief executive Nick Hudson added: “This latest award shortlisting is well-deserved and once again recognises how far the school has come over the last three years, since joining OAT.

“We are very proud to see Ormiston Chadwick Academy representing the OAT ethos on the national stage. I would like to congratulate the principal, staff and students, for the dedication and commitment they have shown, which has made the academy’s rapid improvement possible and seen it rated amongst the best performing schools in the country.”
