The Danny sails away with heritage award
ARESTORED Runcorn steamboat project has scooped a National Historic Ships UK award for its work educating and engaging the public using maritime history.
The Daniel Adamson, also known as The Danny, triumphed in the Regional Flagship Of The Year 2017 North West category.
It will receive a grant of £250 to spend on the vessel as well as a pennant.
The project was among four schemes to receive regional recognition in the awards and National Historic Ships UK said The Danny had undertaken an ‘ intensive series of visits to locations including Ellesmere Port, Liverpool and Lymm.
Vessel owners were required to produce seasonal programmes to engage the public through festivals, demonstrations, cruises, quayside visits and participation in races and similar activities. Entries were also expected to promote the role of National Historic Ships UK by distributing public relations material and flying the association flag as ambassadors. ●
The Danny spent most its working life from 1922 to 1984 based in Runcorn and most of its crew were from Runcorn and Widnes.
It was rescued from the scrapheap after being bought for £1 and a massive campaign secured a £3.8m grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund to restore it with the boat made its return maiden voyage in April.
Hannah Cunliffe, National Historic Ships UK director, said: “I am delighted that we are able to offer these awards once more.
“Our four 2017 regional flagships have all shown their enthusiasm for raising the profile of UK maritime heritage at the events they are attending and we look forward to working closely with them in the months ahead.”
