Warning over fake Gateway bridge website

-

A WARNING has been issued after a fake website and phone number claiming to offer Mersey Gateway toll discounts appeared online.

Residents are being advised to ensure they use the official Merseyflow website and call centre to register for discounts on tolls for Halton’s river crossings.

A Merseyflow spokesman said the team is cracking down on the fake site and number, which have been reported to the police.

People in Halton and beyond are now being urged to be vigilant of scammers.

The spokesman said attempted criminal scams of this kind are ‘commonplace’ on tolling schemes around the world.

Merseyflow chief executive Anthony Alicastro said: “We know that there are some criminals trying to set up fake numbers and websites to con people.

“We’re watching them and have already informed the police and will take whatever action we can to shut them down.

“It is really important to say that the only place you can register online is at www.merseyflow. co.uk and the only number to call to register is 01928 878 878.

“We’d hate anyone to fall victim to these criminals.”

The Merseyflow team is recommending people register for discounts on tolls as early as possible ahead of the expected last minute rush as the new bridge opening this autumn.

When the Mersey Gateway opens, the Silver Jubilee Bridge (SJB) will close for up to 12 months for refurbishment and reconfiguration work.

The SJB will also be tolled when it re-opens.

Those who think they may have been caught out by the scam or have any concerns about other fraudulent activity can contact police on 0300 123 2040 to report the crime.
