Bomber highlight of festival

-

A LEGENDARY bomber designed by a Widnesborn engineer has wowed crowds.

The Avro Lancaster was the icing on the cake when it appeared in the sky above the Croft Nostalgia Festival.

The Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight’s centrepiece drew all eyes skyward as it banked and rolled over what would have once been home to such aircraft back in the Second World War.

The aircraft was designed by Roy Chadwick, who was born at Marsh Hall Farm in Farnworth in 1893.

He was an aeronautical engineer and aircraft designer and was responsible for a host of famous aircraft.

He produced preliminary designs for the jet-powered Vulcan bomber but did not live to see it fly as he was killed in a crash during a test flight of another aircraft in 1947.

He worked closely with Sir Barnes Wallis on the development of ● the ‘bouncing bomb’ which was used successfully during the ‘Dam Busters’ raids of 1943.

Circuit manager Cat Lund said: “It’s been a super weekend at Croft Nostalgia Festival.

“I’d like to pass my thanks on to all of those involved in making it such a success, and to all of the thousands of spectators we welcomed through the gates here at Croft.

“We’ve had some of the best historic racing around on-track but off-track is where the festival really shines and once again there was so much to see and do for families and people of all ages.

“The event really has come into its own as the years pass, and it continues to grow.”
