Charity quiz for foodbank

-

WIDNES Foodbank has organised its own quiz night with a twist.

The charity, which provides three-day emergency food parcels to people in crisis, will be hosting the event at Farnworth Methodist Hall on Derby Road on Friday, November 3.

Refreshments will be available on the night and tickets are free.

However, quiz-goers are asked to bring along one donation of nonperishable food per person.

Widnes Foodbank communications coordinator Gareth Watson said: “The quiz night comes at a time when we’re preparing for our busiest months – the Christmas and winter period. In recent years we’ve seen higher numbers of people turning to us in the build up to the festive period.

“We wanted to bring the community together for our first ever quiz night to show how a single can has the potential to go a long way.

“In the 12 months to April the local commu- ● nity has generously donated over 22,000kgs of food, so it’s also our way of saying ‘thank you’.

“Without these kind gestures we simply wouldn’t be able to operate our foodbank for the people who need us most.”

Figures released by the foodbank earlier this year revealed that 1,137 emergency food parcels were provided to people facing hardship during 2016-17.

The foodbank reports that the increase in people turning to the charity is due to issues surrounding benefit payments, low wages, and insecure work.

Doors on the night will be open from 6.30pm, with the main event commencing from 7pm. Quiz teams of friends and family are encouraged, but teams of one are also welcome.

To obtain tickets call the foodbank office on 0151 422 0031.
