Gateway set to open at the weekend
THE Mersey Gateway bridge between Runcorn and Widnes looks set to open this weekend.
The Weekly News understands the £600m scheme could finally open to traffic on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
On the chosen day, the bridge will open at midnight. Hours before, there will be a spectacular fireworks display on the bridge deck that will be visible from both banks of the river.
Bosses at builder Merseylink have yet to confirm the official opening date.
More than 1,000 workers are now carrying out the final works on the bridge so it can open to the public.
Once the new bridge opens, the Silver Jubilee bridge will close for long-planned maintenance work.
The six-lane bridge is 2,130m long including the viaducts on each side, and crosses 1,000m of the Mersey.
The formal opening of the bridge is not likely to happen until next year.
Many hope The Queen, who last month opened the new Forth road bridge in Scotland, will declare it open.
