Halton swimmers bag medals and clock terrific times in Birkenhead

HALTON Swimming Club were represente­d by five of their young swimmers at the Wirral Metro Level 2 October Meet, held at Europa Pools in Birkenhead.

The youngest member of the team, Sam Shurie competed in six events and collected four medals and clocked four new personal best times.

Gold medals came in the 100m individual medley and 50m backstroke, both in new personal best times of 1:24.72 and 37.63 respective­ly.

Sam also won a silver medal in the 100m backstroke in a new best time of 1:23.15, knocking more than five seconds off his previous best mark and claimed a bronze medal in the 50m breaststro­ke in a time of 46.12.

Fourteen-year-old Libby Harrison had a good meet in which she competed in seven events. She produced a great swim in the 50m backstroke resulting in a first place finish and a gold medal with a new personal best time of 34.74. Silver medals followed in the 200m backstroke and the 100m breaststro­ke, the backstroke event producing a new personal best time of 2:42.30, an improvemen­t of more than three seconds.

Libby also produced good performanc­es in the 50m breaststro­ke, 100m backstroke, 50m, 100 and 200m freestyle, finishing just outside the medal places.

Twelve-year-old Alfie Mather was looking to get under the 31 second barrier in the 50m freestyle and duly delivered, finishing the event in 30.99s claiming fifth place in doing so.

Alfie also competed in the 100m butterfly and produced a great swim finishing in third place to collect a bronze medal in a new personal best time of 1:21.29.

Thirteen-year-old Emmie Brownlow took part in five events, finishing each one in a new personal best time.

Her impressive swims came in the 50m breaststro­ke (42.46), 100m individual medley (1:21.02), 50m freestyle (31.42), 50m butterfly (33.66) and the 50m backstroke (37.35).

Fourteen-year-old Lucy Harris competed in three events – the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and the 50m backstroke.

Lucy collected a silver medal in the backstroke event and finished just outside the medals in the butterfly and freestyle events. ●
