HALTON residents are being urged to remain extra vigilant as the darker nights begin to draw in.

Police are reminding residents to double check their security measures before the clocks go back on Sunday, October 29.

A Cheshire police spokeswoman said often at this time of year there can be an increase in the number of burglaries reported to police and officers have some useful tips which can help prevent residents becoming a victim to thieves.

Superintendent Peter Crowcroft said: “As the clocks go back this weekend the nights become darker much earlier and this can often lead to an increase in burglaries.

“We don’t want anyone to fall victim of this inva- sive crime and so we are urging and reminding residents to follow these simple yet secure and effective steps which can help to reduce their chances of falling victim to thieves.”

Tips offered for keeping the home safe include investing in a burglar alarm as most houses which are burgled do not have one fitted.

Residents are advised to ensure all windows are closed and locked or, at the very least, use the security measures on modern windows, which allow them to let some air in but still be locked.

All external doors should be secured at all times even when at home, while all desirable items ought to be kept out of view to passers-by and should not be visible from windows and doors.

Police are also advising that garages and sheds are locked with strong padlocks and ideally fitted with an alarm, while residents are asked to consider buying timer switches to turn on table lamps, standard lamps and radios around the home as it gets dark to make it look as if someone is at home.

Residents are also being urged to consider installing outside lights.

For vehicle safety, motorists are advised to ensure their keys are not left on view and are kept safe and out of sight.

The spokeswoman added: “Insecure vehicles are also an easy target for thieves who often check door handles until they find a car that is unlocked and then steal any valuable items from inside − or steal the car itself.”

Anyone who sees somebody acting suspiciously is asked to report it to the police immediately by calling 101.
