AMEMBER of social group for Widnes Vikings supporters aged over 55 has praised the programme.

The club hosts Golden Generation every Friday afternoon at the Halton Stadium.

The group undertakes activities including looking back at the special days gone by, talks from club legends, presentations of archive game footage, and exclusive talks with current first team stars.

Since its launch in 2015, Golden Generation has grown to become a thriving group and attracts a large number of regular members.

They have found friendship and had the opportunity to enjoy unique experiences with the club that they love.

For member Bill Griffiths, it has become a highlight of his week.

He said: “A few years ago, I had to stop working because of stress.

“I was counselled as a result and told to get out and meet people and talk.

“This group is a really good example of meeting like-minded people and talking about rugby league.

“I’ve been watching the game since I was five years of age, so this is the perfect group for me.

“It keeps me going. It is something that I look forward to being involved with every week.”

The group are often treated to appearances from first team squad members and staff, with Bill enjoying the behind the scenes access.

He said: “It’s been brilliant hearing from the players. I’ve especially enjoyed listening to the back-room staff we have here at the club.

“It’s exciting and a bit different hearing from the staff behind the scenes. They come here and talk to us quite openly, and you can see they are hard-working individuals that help the club move forward.

“A prime example of this was Phil Finney, the Vikings’ head of youth performance. I really enjoyed listening to him talking about the young stars that we have coming through and the plans the club has moving forward.” ●

Bill said that the group are keen to encourage more people to join them on a Friday, to get together and celebrate Widnes’s past, present and future.

He added: “I would say to anyone thinking of coming along, to do it.

“We’re a friendly bunch, so don’t be shy, and give it a go!”

Golden Generation is supported by NHS Halton Clinical Commissioning Group.
