ANEW power safety competition for primary schools in Halton which gives pupils a chance of winning a brand new iPad for their class has been launched by an energy firm.

Thousands of pupils will be invited to take part in PowerWise Champions, an interactive lesson in the importance of staying safe around electricity.

They then complete a drawing challenge to win their school the prize which also includes a power safety session from a SP Energy Networks engineer.

PowerWise Champions is a power safety initiative run by SP Energy Networks, the owner and maintainer of powerlines in Halton.

The initiative encourages pupils to learn about the importance of staying safe around electricity through a free online educational resource which is available to teachers, parents and kids.

Schools will also be given the opportunity to nominate their PowerWise Champion, a pupil who will be selected as their school’s power safety ambassador and be the individual that passes on their power safety knowledge to their friends on how to behave in the event of a power cut.

SP Energy Networks director Stephen Stewart said: “Here at SP Energy Networks we’re all enthused by power and ● how h it affects ff t everything thi around d us.

“We’re proud to be able to bring our vital safety messaging into schools, sharing the importance of being prepared for a power emergency.

“There’s loads of simple steps that we can bear in mind to make sure we keep safe in a power cut.

“Hopefully our PowerWise Champions initiative will generate excitement and enthusiasm for power safety in Halton. We look forward to seeing all of the entries.”

PowerWise is a free teaching resource available to school teachers to help educate pupils on the importance of power safety. All lesson concepts are interactive, intriguing and linked to the English curriculum.
