Video highlights risks of alcohol

-

AN ALCOHOL misuse specialist who works for an NHS organisation operating in Halton has recorded a short video to help others.

Dr Phil Cooper is a nurse consultant in alcohol and drug misuse for North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

In the video, he speaks about awareness and coping mechanisms for those struggling with alcohol.

It supports the national Alcohol Awareness Week campaign run by Alcohol Concern and supported by Public Health England, which this year will focus on alcohol and health, and the health risks associated with drinking.

The campaign is taking place from Monday, November 13, to Sunday, November 19.

As well as the physical health risks associated with drinking, such as an increased risk of cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure, alcohol can also have a negative impact on someone’s mental health and wellbeing.

Dr Cooper said: “Lots of people drink alcohol to try and help them feel more relaxed, but if you have a mental health problem like anxiety, alcohol can actually make your symptoms worse.

“Instead of turning to alcohol, there are lots of other ways you can manage your symptoms, such as learning relaxation and controlled breathing techniques to relieve stress and anxiety, and by making time for things that make you feel good in your daily routine to boost your mood and improve your wellbeing.” ● To find out more about Alcohol Awareness Week visit www.alcoholconcern.org.uk ●
