Liverpool Sefton II 4

Runcorn I 1 AFTER a successful trip to Neston (see match report on page 54), Runcorn Hockey Club’s men’s first-team were once more away from The Heath School but facing a tougher test at the division pacesetters on the first Saturday of this month.

Looking for a strong opening phase to set the tone, Runcorn got off to the worst possible start as a couple of defensive mistake gave Liverpool Sefton a two-goal lead within the opening 10 minutes. ●

Runcorn found themselves playing catch up but were struggling as their high-flying hosts controlled proceedings.

The visitors continued to try to pull themselves back into the match.

Their efforts were rewarded when they cut the deficit in half as the interval approached.

Forwards Pete Jones and Ruan Pretorius combined well for the latter to finish.

As the second half started Runcorn continued to push and apply pressure on the home side, but despite their efforts they missed clear chances or did not complete the pass at the pivotal moment.

The visitors continued to press upfield but this gave Liverpool Sefton more space and in the final eight minutes of the match the confirmed the result with two more goals.

Runcorn’s man-of-thematch accolade went to Christian White for a solid performance in the rare role of centre-back.
