‘We’re in a good place but must stay grounded’

-

● THREE games in six days, 11 goals, none conceded and nine points.

It was a good Christmas – to say the least – for Runcorn Linnets boss Michael Ellison.

With his side crowning their Boxing Day humiliation of title rivals Runcorn Town with a 2-0 victory over Hanley Town on Friday evening, the manager jetted off to Tenerife this week ahead of this Saturday’s trip to Winsford United.

And Friday’s victory – their eighth in 11 games – has left Linnets in a “good place” according to Ellison.

“We knew it would be tough before the game. They’re a good side and they made it difficult for us but I thought we played really well and it was a really good performance,” the Linnets boss said.

“It was important we followed the Runcorn Town game with three points and I think we knew we’d get a chance and score so the most important thing was keeping the back door shut. They had a few long shots off target but it was a really good performance from the lads.”

Looking ahead to the clash with Winsford, he added: “We’re at a good place at the minute. The lads are confident, they want to play the games and keep on doing what we’re doing, keeping concentrated and it will be another tough game in tough conditions and bad weather.

“I know they’ve had a couple called off lately and we’re not too sure if it’s going to be on. All we can do is prepare like it’s going to be on and take the good stuff from the last couple of games into that game.”

Ellison also urged his players to keep doing what they’ve been doing and keep their feet firmly grounded.

“It’s all about continuation and getting into good habits, just little reminders of the things that got us where we are,” he said.

“We’ve got to keep our feet on the floor because there’s a long way to go yet.”

And even when the Linnets boss isn’t in the country, his team aren’t far away from his thoughts.

“I’ve got a pina colada and my phone, organising training!” he laughed. “I’ll be back for the game Saturday, and the lads know what’s expected of them. It’s just a continuation.”
