Herbert – It’s in our own hands

RUNCORN TOWN boss Chris Herbert believes 2017 was “successful enough” but admits his side’s future is in their own hands.

Town were unbeaten in the league until November before losing three of their last four matches, and Herbert thinks his players can “still have a good go” at automatic promotion – when they finally play a game.

Runcorn’s clash at Northwich Victoria on Saturday was postponed, and Herbert shed doubt on this weekend’s scheduled home clash with Barnoldswick Town going ahead.

“It’s doubtful for Saturday as the weather has come in and the pitch isn’t playable at the moment,” he said.

“Last year was a building process and this year we really want to have a good go at [promotion], but fixtures do have a big say in that.

“There’s not much we can do about it, that’s taken from our hands, we can only play the games that are there and when you haven’t got momentum that is quite tough.”

But the manager isn’t allowing his players to rest on their laurelsdescribing their weekend training session as a “blitzing” – and urging his side to “get on with it”.

Herbert said: “We trained Saturday, had a really hard session, the lads had a blitzing ready for when we do actually play and I said it to them then ‘we will come good’.

“We just need to get them games in so we can get going, and when we do, it’ll come thick and fast. We’ve just got to get on with it.”

With a good start being checked by a poor winter period, Herbert fired a final warning shot to his players as he urged them to remember there will be no excuses at the end of the season.

“It’s been successful enough. We haven’t won anything but we’re there or thereabouts,” he assessed when asked how he thought his side acquitted themselves during the first half of the season.

“We got ourselves into a good position last season [during Herbert’s first year with the club], into a position I don’t think anyone expected us to get in, and now we’re on track to do better.

“It’s all on us, it’s all in our own hands so no one can get blamed for it. It’s all on us.”

Saturday’s game with Barnoldswick at Pavilions kicks-off at 3pm. Town also have a league match at Congleton Town next Tuesday evening.

The game at the Richborough Estates Stadium kicks-off at 7.45pm.
