Sci-Tech boss celebrates OBE honour
THE boss of Sci-Tech Daresbury’s parent organisation has been made an Officer Of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire (OBE) in the New Year’s Honours for his impact in the field of scientific measurement.
Dr Brian Bowsher, Science And Technology Facilities Council (STFC) chief executive, was awarded the OBE for his contribution to national and international ‘metrology’.
The field covers the gamut of scales from subatomic distances to astronomical expanses and its theory has a bearing on diverse technologies from the National Grid to determining the wavelengths of signals that enable stable wifi and global positioning satellites to precision aircraft engineering.
It also sets international standards so measurements such as a kilogram, litre or pint is the same across continents.
An STFC spokeswoman said his work led to him being elected to the global committee that oversees metrology worldwide where he played a major role in making the organisation fit for the 21st Century.
She said Dr Bowsher served with great distinction on STFC’s council before accepting his fixed-term role as chief executive where he has continued the exemplary work of forging international connections and strengthening UK science.
Dr Bowsher retires on March 31, 2018.
Professor Sir Michael Sterling, STFC chairman, said: “On behalf of STFC council, and all our staff, I am absolutely delighted that Brian’s personal contribution to science and technology, especially metrology, has been recognised.
“It is a fitting tribute to a life time of achievement for which we should all be very thankful.” ●
