We’ll need that character – Herbert

- BY SAM CARROLL

RUNCORN Town lost more ground on leaders and rivals Runcorn Linnets after their 0-0 draw with Congleton Town on Tuesday night – but boss Chris Herbert believes his side just “have to get themselves going again.”

Town were unbeaten in the le league until November when a r run of three defeats in four matches – including a 5-0 Boxing Day lapse at home to Linnets –moved Herbert’s men d down to second place.

But despite the blip, Herbert was delighted with the reaction of his players after their comeback victory on S Saturday against Barnoldswick. ●

“There was a five-minute spell where we switched off for the two goals and that cost us,” he explained. “But after that, we got into half-time and turned it around, the scoreline doesn’t really say how dominant we were.”

Town are now four points behind their arch rivals Linnets in the table with only a game in hand remaining. This is the first time Herbert’s side have not been mathematically ahead in the Hallmark Security Premier Division, but Herbert maintains Saturday’s victory displayed the character they will need for the rest of the season.

“After the postponements and a few defeats, it really does show that the lads have got it in them to respond,” he said.

“It’s credit to them, they’ve been working hard and we’ve just been trying to get games on and free weeks have all affected the way we’ve been playing.

“It would affect anyone, but the lads have stuck at it and they’ll get their rewards because they work hard and they’re honest players.”

Runcorn face Padiham away on Saturday – a team who they’ve never lost against at this level.

“It’s a big game, they’re doing well at the minute but we’re wanting to spoil it and get ourselves going again,” he said.

Town then host 1874 Northwich in the Premier Division next Wednesday.
