Golfers show support to Guide Dogs

-

THE charity Guide Dogs has been given a much-needed funding boost by the kind ladies at Runcorn Golf Club.

The golfers have raised more than £2,000 this past year through a range of activities including their annual charity coffee morning, golf contests, an open day at Poppies with raffle proceeds given to the charity, a whist drive as well as many donations from friends and family.

Ladies captain, Mrs Jill Brookes, presented the cheque for £2,111 to representative from Guide Dogs after their weekly golf competition on January 30.

Mrs Brookes chose to support the work of Guide Dogs across Merseyside and Cheshire when she came into office in 2017.

After being passionate about the cause and personally supporting the work of Guide Dogs for many years, Mrs Brookes said: “It gives me great pleasure to hand over the cheque to Guide Dogs and ‘thank-you’ to everyone who has supported our fundraising this year.”

Across the UK there are approximately two million people living with sight loss, of which 180,000 of those people rarely leave their home alone and often experience feelings of isolation and depression.

The charity Guide Dogs provide support to help people with sight loss move around safely and confidently, to get out of their homes and be able to live their lives the way they choose.

Since the charity partnered their first guide dogs to people with sight loss back in 1931, they have transformed the lives of thousands of people with sight loss from all across the UK.

Within the Runcorn and Widnes area alone there are currently 18 working guide dog partnerships, that each cost the charity £5 per day to fund.

Each guide dog partnership has a lifetime cost of just over £56,000 and the charity rely on donations like that of Runcorn Golf Club ladies to fund these and make a continuing promise to all of its guide dog owners that they will provide them with the support they need for as long as they need it.

Guide Dogs community fundraiser, Dawn Gerrard, attended the presentation along with local guide dog owner Matthew Mair, his wife Linda and Matthew’s lifechanging guide dog, Monty.

On being presented with the cheque, Dawn said: “We are so thankful for the amazing generosity and amount raised over the last 12 months by Runcorn Golf Club ladies.

“The money donated will go towards providing our life-changing services and hopefully supporting even more local people with sight loss in and around Runcorn.” ● Feel inspired by the kindness of Runcorn Golf Club?
