Pupils deliver environment presentation

-

ATEAM of young grot-busters have taken their antilitter campaign to the Town Hall to put their case to the borough’s public spaces chiefs.

The students from Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy (OBA) were due to give a presentation to Halton Council’s environment and urban renewal board last night after the Weekly News had gone to print.

All of the pupils are members of the high school’s Young Leaders Group’ (YLG) programme, which is aimed at nurturing the skills to take charge.

Twenty-four were due to attend and reveal how they clear away shopping trolleys and disused household goods blighting east Runcorn.

Council officers have advised councillors to welcome the work being done.

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Sophie Styles, OBA’s member of staff who oversees the YLG, said: “After lots of discussion, our young leaders cohort decided that litter was a key issue within their community.

“Working together, the students who are all in Year 8, came up with four fantastic ideas of how they would like to tackle the problem.

“I am so proud of the community spirit, dedication and caring nature of my students.”

George Taylor, pupil, said: “I joined young leaders so that I can work on achieving an extra qualification which will help to make me stand out when I apply for university.

“I also really want to help my local community and believe that improving the litter aspect is one of the main ways to do this.”

Chloe Brown, also taking part, said: “I think the litter project is a good idea because this means the local environment will be safer and cleaner.

“If we can make a difference with this then we have achieved our goal to help the environment and other people.”

Lewis Barrigan, also Year 8, said: “As a group we decided that litter was a problem we need to change.”
