Beastly weather leaves League Committee with more headaches

-

THE leftovers from the ‘Beast From The East’ put paid to any chance of the Bowdon versus Widnes fixture going ahead at Clay Lane last Saturday.

In fact, the continuing bad weather put paid to the chance of any games being played in South Lancashire/ Cheshire One.

In short, it all means even more of a headache for the League Committee who are already having to work overtime in an effort to re-arrange all of the remaining fixtures.

It also potentially throws another spanner into the works of Widnes’s Lancashire Plate semi-final at De La Salle which may, or may not go ahead now a week on Saturday – March 17.

All in all, the dreadful weather means it has been one of the most disruptive and fragmented seasons for many years, and with plenty of fixtures still outstanding, there are likely to be yet more changes on the league ladder as teams finally catch up.

In the meantime, the extra week off means that Widnes have been able to focus fully on this Saturday’s home game with Sefton.

And, what an encounter it promises to be!

The Merseysiders have been the Red-and-Blacks’ nemesis since they came together in South Lancashire/Cheshire One last term, winning all three games.

Last season, they completed a league double, winning 24-18 at home before going to seal the job 31-22 at Heath Road.

Their hold over the Heath Roaders also continued this season as they blunted a second half Widnes comeback back to eventually get home by a final scoreline of 31-26.

In other games, though, the Thornhead Lane outfit have blown hot and cold, with a disappointing losing run offset by terrific performances against the likes of high-flying Broughton Park, whom they disposed of in round one.

On the other hand, they do seem to have what is required when it comes to taking on the Wids, so Lee McDermott’s charges are going to have to be fully switched on and raring to go if they have ambitions to improve on that disappointing record against their local rivals.

Spectators are reminded that the game kicks-off at the later time of 3pm.
