Pupils have the perfect chemistry for contest
●
YOUNG scientists from Widnes schools and beyond have competed in Cronton Sixth Form College’s annual science and maths competition.
The contest pitches seven teams of four talented students against each other as they take part in a series of tasks which involve experiments and investigations in biology, chemistry and physics as well as computing, maths and animal management.
Teams from Wade Deacon High School and Ormiston Chadwick Academy (OCA) in Widnes competed alongside St Gregory’s Catholic and Great Sankey high schools from Warrington, using communication, teamwork and collaboration to solve problems and show their number-crunching and practical skills.
Their performances were then scored and graded by staff from Cronton’s science and maths centre of excellence.
After a gruelling competition of activities and challenges, each participant was awarded a certificate by Ben Barton, Cronton Sixth Form’s deputy head.
St Gregory’s Team One took first place, followed by Wade Deacon Team One, with OCA in third place.
Chris Wright, Cronton’s science programme leader, said: “Congratulations to all of the splendid teams that took part and the staff who helped and supported the students and ran the activities.
“This was the seventh year the event has taken place and it is always a great success.” ● A Cronton Sixth former meets a snake ● ● Cronton pupils take part in a challenge
