SCIENCE and medical students from Widnes took part in a presentation evening to show the results of their research projects to a captivated audience.
The Cronton Sixth Form College students also took the opportunity to present a cheque of £1,104.49 to the charity Mind Halton.
The evening combined Cronton’s Tomorrow’s Scientists programme and the college’s Science And Medical Society with the opportunity to develop skills in problem based learning, research and public speaking.
The students worked in small groups throughout the year to complete a medical research project about topics including cystic fibrosis, ebola, haemophilia, lactose intolerance, prostate cancer, schizophrenia and drugs in pregnancy.
They then produced a presentation and with the help of A-level drama and theatre studies tutor ● Matt Plant, worked on their presenting skills.
Each year, students also use college enrichment programmes to raise money for a chosen charity.
This year they selected Mind Halton and the Youth Advisory Service.
They have organised various fundraising events, including a sponsored biscuit challenge in which all first year A-level students raced to ice as many biscuits as possible in 10 minutes.
Money was also raised through college competitions, cake sales and an ‘iron man’ activity day which included a full day treadmill event.
The total raised for charity was £1,354.49: £1,104.49 for Mind Halton and £250 for the Youth Advisory Service which was presented earlier in the year.
Nic Lunt from Mind Halton was at the event and was delighted to receive the cheque from the students.
Science tutor Jill Greenhalgh said: “I would like to thank everyone involved with the presentation evening, it was a huge success for our students. It was wonderful to see how the students have blossomed over this year through the society.
“I was especially touched that the students had raised so much money for Mind Halton as we also raised £250 earlier this year for the Youth Advisory Service and most of this success was down to the students themselves.”
The presentation groups were: ● Cystic fibrosis – Thomas Fillingham, Sophia Loizou, Michael Rush ● Ebola – Caitlin Bullen, Simon Worsley, Hassan Arshad, Lauryn Hall, Megan Howe ● Haemophilia – Megan Ashton, Riman Bains, Lara Mccaffrey ● Lactose intolerance – Shaun Briers, Ryan Briers, Charlie Lamb ● Prostate cancer – Daniel Roberts, Meghan Arnell, Mecmillan Rajaratnam ● Schizophrenia – Abigail Jones, Alisha Pass, Neve Carter, Ashleigh Wilcox ● Drugs in pregnancy – Niamh Roche, Freya Hill, Isabelle Whitby
