Stadium bring their ‘A’ game when it matters to secure silverware

ON Monday night in the Widnes & District Darts League, the Halton Stadium Cup five-a-sides were played to a conclusion at Halton Stadium.

In the pre-lims, the Wellington ‘A’ against the Goldmine ‘B’ took the first game through Ste Whitfield, but James Holden soon levelled for the Goldmine. However, the Wellington pushed ahead once more through Lol Fonterigo and with the Goldmine short of players the Wellington went through to the next round.

Mill Brow ‘A’ took on Widnes BC ‘B’ taking the first game through Jack Dunn. However, the Bowler’s Scott Grady soon levelled and a further win from Joe Batty took them ahead. Needing the last two games, the Brow stuck to the task and through Dave Powell and Paul Linger they went through to the next round.

Goldmine ‘A’ facing Hammer & Pincers found themselves up against a sparkling and proud side, but the sparkle was soon extinguish­ed as the Goldmine romped to a win taking all five games through Karl Windish, Mike Callaghan, Phil Corless, Sean Bell and Terry Roach.

Mill Brow SC ‘B’ up against the Widnes Bowling Club ‘A’ conceded the first game to the Bowler’s Tex Bowles.

Parity was restored through Dean Birks which Neil Platt quickly added too. The score was soon level as the Bowler’s Andy Beddows took the penultimat­e game. However, with a player short the Brow took the match by default.

The Simms Cross Institute ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams had been drawn against each other with the ‘B’ side quickly establishi­ng an unassailab­le lead through Paul Batty, Mick Cullen, Glyn Owen and Andy Abbott. The ‘A’ team had the final say as Dave Evans ensured there would be no whitewash.

In the quarter-finals, Halton Stadium ‘A’ against the Goldmine ‘A’ fell behind as Karl Windisch secured the opener. However, the Stadium rallied taking the remaining games and the match through Joe Kelly, Eddie Dootson, Kevin Garcia and John Bowles.

Halton Stadium ‘B’ taking on Simms Cross Institute ‘B’ saw Paul Batty give the Stute the first game. However, two quickfire wins from the Stadium’s Tony Jackson and John Killkenny reversed fortunes. Andy Abbott squared proceeding­s for the Stute, but with a place in the semi-finals all resting on the final game, Joe Price put the Stadium through.

Mill Brow ‘A’ against the Millfield ‘A’ opened up an early lead via Jack Dunn only to see Billy Fox level the score. However, this parity was not to last as Paul Linger (180), Brian Spruce and Dave Powell were all victorious on the oche.

The Wellington took on the Mill Brow ‘B’ and proceeded to claim the first two games via Ste Whitfield and Anthony Hall. The Brow recovered a point through Neil Platt, but the Wellington were on a roll as they took the remaining two games and the match through Karl Whitfield and James Holden.

In the semi-finals, Halton Stadium ‘A’ locked horns with Halton Stadium ‘B’. ●

The ‘A’ team took the first contest through Alan Magee. The ‘B’ team levelled with a win from Neil Ward. That was as good as it got for the ‘B’ team, however, as Halton Stadium ‘A’ scooped up the final three games and the match through Joe Kelly, Kevin Garcia and John Bowles (16 darts and 180).

Mill Brow ‘A’ took on the Wellington ‘A’ and grabbed the first game through Jack Dunn.

Anthony Hall soon levelled for the Wellington. The Brow took the lead again via Paul Linger, but again the Wellington levelled, this time through Karl Whitfield.

The outcome was resolved as Dave Powell took the final game and the match for the Mill Brow SC ‘A’.

In the final, Mill Brow SC ‘A’ took on Halton Stadium ‘A’.

And in an oustanding display, the Stadium proceeded to bring home all five games and the match through Alan Magee, Joe Kelly, Eddie Dootson, John Bowles and Kevin Garcia to take the Halton Stadium Trophy.
