Widnes to host Rhinos in the Challenge Cup

-

● WIDNES will face Leeds Rhinos in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup sixth round following yesterday morning’s draw.

The Vikings will have been pleased to be drawn at home against the current Super League champions where they have a good record in recent times.

Back in February, Denis Betts’s men got the better of the Rhinos 23-6 at the Select Security Stadium with tries from Joe Mellor, Krisnan Inu and Danny Walker.

Elsewhere in the draw, arguably the tie of the round sees current league leaders St Helens travel across the Pennines to face Castleford Tigers.

The two sides met at the same stage last year with the Tigers running out 58-10 winners though Saints have seen massive improvement since then.

Current Challenge Cup holders Hull FC will take a trip to in-form Championship side Featherstone Rovers in round six while their cross-city neighbours Hull Kingston Rovers host Wigan Warriors.

Warrington Wolves will play at home despite coming out of the bag as the away side against Toronto Wolfpack. The Canadian outfit has to play its Cup games away this season.

Sunday, April 26, 1992 WIDNES were soundly beaten 42-16 despite matching a Wigan side that included man-ofthe-match and current Widnes head coach Denis Betts for an hour.

Falling behind to an early penalty, Widnes took the lead through a Richie Eyres try that was cancelled out by Betts with Botica’s goal giving Wigan the edge.

Andy Currier’s converted try then levelled the scores before Martin Offiah scored against his former club just before the interval.

After Botica added another two goals, Brian Carbert scored his only Widnes try but Offiah sprinted 70 yards to confirm Wigan’s advantage. ● WIDNES VIKINGS: On This Day is available now at £9.99 from the Vikings Superstore.
