ATEACHER at Ormiston Chadwick Academy has been rewarded for a fine start to his teaching career by being presented with a Silver Teaching Award in the ‘Outstanding New Teacher Of The Year’ category at the Pearson Teaching Awards.

Ryan Mallett will be presented with his trophy in a ceremony at the Academy, and is entered for a Gold Award at the Pearson Teaching Awards in October that will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC.

Mr Mallett joined OCA in September 2016, and was appointed head of department in his first year of teaching as well as being selected to lead OCA’s Duke Of Edinburgh scheme.

He is one of just 65 teachers selected as a Silver Teaching Award winner from thousands of teachers nominated by their students and school leaders across the UK, and was put forward for the award by Tuesday Humby, executive principal of Ormiston Chadwick Academy and regional director for Ormiston Academy Trust, for his exceptional dedication to his students.

The winners were announced on Friday, June 22 which is ‘Thank A Teacher Day’ in the UK and was also a day which marked the 20th Pearson Teaching Awards.

Jennifer Lowry-Johnson, principal of Ormiston Chadwick Academy, said: “This is such a fantastic achievement for Ryan and I would like to congratulate him on receiving this award in recognition of all the fantastic work he does here at Ormiston Chadwick Academy and how much this is valued by students, staff and the wider school community who nominated him.

“He is a very deserving winner and we all wish him the very best in the next stage of the awards. ●

“As an academy, we pride ourselves on our extremely dedicated, hardworking staff who live and breathe our mantra ‘above and beyond’ to ensure that all of our students receive a first-class education and are encouraged and supported to reach their full potential.”

Tuesday Humby said: “Not only is this is a fantastic result for Ryan but it is another fantastic result for the academy as a whole.

“I’m so proud of Ryan and of all that he has achieved here at Ormiston Chadwick Academy.

“Ryan’s achievement adds further to our fantastic list of successes over the past year.

“Our success is always testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, students, and parents.”

Michael Morpurgo, celebrated author, former children’s laureate, and president of the Teaching Awards Trust, said: “The best we can do is to pass on to children all that we know and love and mean every word.

“I think above all else, a teacher should be a friend, and that’s not an easy thing to do when there are 35 children out there.

“With these awards we are shining a light on these inspirational individuals whose efforts and commitment so often go uncelebrated.”

Rod Bristow, president of Pearson UK, said: “A huge congratulations to all those receiving a silver trophy today.

“They should feel extremely proud of their achievements

“They join an inspirational group of Teaching Award winners from the past two decades.

“It’s an honour for Pearson to support these Awards each year - it’s so vital to recognise and celebrate those in the teaching profession, for their commitment to education and for the impact they have on young people’s lives.“
