Dominant Stute lift the Cup
ON Friday evening in the Widnes & District Darts League, the latter stages of the George Williams Cup took place at Widnes Cricket Club.
The first semi-final was between Widnes Cricket Club and Simms Cross Institute.
Kevin Baxter took the first game for the Cricket Club.
This was quickly matched by Tony Green for the Stute.
A further three wins from Ged McPartland (11 darts), Glyn Owen & Andy Abbott and Ged McPartland & Tony Green gave the Stute a healthy 4-1 lead.
This advantage was not to last, however, as three wins in a row from final pair Ben Hewitt & Billy Cain plus the first two singles via Ben Hewitt and Rob Morris levelled the scoreline at 4-4.
The outcome was resolved as Glyn Owen took the final game and the match for Simms Cross Institute.
The second semi-final was between Goldmine and Hough Green SSC.
The Goldmine secured the first three games via Tim Hunt, Peter Mullally and Adam Mullally.
Hough Green recovered a point via Andy McIntosh & Barry Sefton, only to see Sean Bell & Phil Corless add another point to the Goldmine’s tally.
Hough Green were still in with a slim hope of winning as Paul Woods & Keith Glover bagged the next game.
However back in the singles, the Goldmine had other ideas as Phil Corless and Ray O’Connor took a further two games to guarantee their team’s place in the final.
So it was simply a consolation to Hough Green as Tony Barker won the final game.
In the final, the Goldmine took on Simms Cross Institute, and it was quickly over as the Stute gave a dominant performance.
They started superbly by taking all three of the opening singles through Ged McPartland, Tony Green and Andy Abbott.
In the pairs there was no respite as Andy Abbott & Glynn Owen and Ged McPartland & Paul Batty sealed the silverware for the team with the contest called early with the Stute in an unassailable position of 5-0 in the best-of-nine showdown.
