Recycle right with tips from new roadshow

-

AROADSHOW has been touring Runcorn and Widnes to encourage everyone to use the right bins for the right waste as part of a bid to boost recycling rates.

Halton Borough Council’s Recycle Right campaign was run in partnership with Veolia and Merseyside Recycling And Waste Authority (MRWA), and staff were also keen to let residents know that they can use the household waste centres for other items such as aerosols and tetra packs rather than putting them into the domestic bin.

The local authority descended on Trident Retail Park in Runcorn and Green Oaks Shopping Centre in Widnes Market to spread the message.

A Halton Council spokesman said waste officers recently launched a campaign aimed at increasing Halton’s recycling rate by up to 3,000 tonnes per year.

The Little Known Items campaign is targeting materials that can be ● taken to the recycling centres such as takeaway coffee cups, hard plastics, batteries, books, textiles and small electrical appliances, but are less well known for being recyclable.

The partner organisations are hoping to collect an estimated 3,000 tonnes of materials for recycling or reuse that might otherwise go to waste.

Leaflets are to be handed out and banners installed to promote the initiative.

Halton’s recycling centres are open seven days a week and located on Johnson’s Lane in Widnes and Picow Farm Road in Runcorn.

Items accepted at the sites including cans and cardboard, wood, mattresses and white goods.

Cllr Stef Nelson (environmental services) said: “As well asa delivering environmental benefits, financial savings can be achieved if we maximise the reuse or recycling of waste materials or unwanted items.

“Every pound we spend disposing of materials that could be recycled or reused can’t be spent on providing more important services for members of our local community.

“This campaign will be really important in highlighting to householders how they can make the best use of the council’s household waste recycling centres.”

Jeff Sears, Veolia director, said: “This campaign is highlighting the lesser known items which are not collected as part of household waste recycling collections

“So often they get thrown away in the residual bin instead.

“Instead of doing this, take them to a recycling centre which accepts items such as takeaway coffee cups, clothes, plastic toys and garden furniture, CD and DVD plastic covers and electrical items.”
