OAPs turn out for road safety event

-

ELDERLY residents from across Runcorn and Widnes were treated to a fun-packed road safety event at The Brindley in a project aimed at reducing traffic collisions.

A short interactive theatre production highlighted the potential dangers experienced by all types of road users enabling them to stay safe on the roads.

Audience members got into the spirit of the event by sharing their experiences and picked up advice and tips to help them travel safely on the roads and reduce the number of road traffic collisions involving senior road users.

There were stands around the theatre from related parties, where people could find out more information.

More than 80 elderly road users attended.

Halton Council said the initiative was part of a campaign aiming to reduce the rising number ● of road traffic collisions involving people over 60 years old.

Cllr Stan Hill (transportation) said: “Research shows in a crash, the risk of a person aged 60 or older being killed, whether in a vehicle or on foot or bicycle, is more than double that of a younger person.

“This event aimed to give people tips on how to stay as safe as possible.

“We are pleased it was so well attended and the feedback was that people got a lot from it.”

The event was hosted by Halton Borough Council’s road safety team and supported by the Merseyside Road Safety Partnership.

A Halton Council spokesman said the session, opened by Halton’s mayor John Bradshaw, was oversubscribed.

The local authority has advised readers to watch out for future events and to be sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
