Parklands aim to keep grip on Challenge Cup
500 games in the former Widnes Alliance League.
A very proud moment in Derek’s life was when he won the prestigious Liverpool County Combination secretary of the year award, a fitting accolade for a person who had given so much to the sport he loved.
The Widnes Football Development Forum, who run the competition, is a collaboration of senior committee members from the many clubs in Widnes.
The purpose of the group is to oversee and organise the running of the Widnes Cup, to develop coach education, facility improvement within Widnes and to work towards FA Charter Standard.
The Forum is supported by Halton Borough Council’s Sports Development Team.
The teams participating in this year’s competition are split into two groups. Group one features favourites St Michaels, Moorfield and newcomers Widnes Dragons and Ditton Athletic, who could spring a few surprises.
Group two contains previous winners and competition favourites Parklands, who will not want to release the title without a fight. After lifting the Widnes Cup, they went on to win the Warrington & District Football League Premier Division in their first season in the division.
Supported by Halebank and Halton Borough there is another surprise package with Avon Villa, an amalgamation of Avon Athletic and Cronton Villa. Avon have appeared in the final on six occasions without a win, losing last year’s final to Parklands. Cronton have appeared on five occasions and won every one. ●
