Offiah in Widnes Hall of Fame

WIDNES legend Martin Offiah MBE is to be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. The flying winger played for Widnes from 1987 to 1991 and scored an amazing 181 tries in 145 a appearance­s. Hav Having signed from Rosslyn Park Rug Rugby Union Club, Offiah’s impact in his first season in rugby league was su such that he was named Man of S Steel, becoming only the third Widnes player to receive the accolade after Doug Laughton and Joe Lydon.

Having scored 42 tries in helping th the Chemics to win both the Ch Championsh­ip and Premiershi­p titl titles, Offiah (left) was selected in the Grea Great Britain party to tour Australia in 1988 a and played in all three Tests against the Kangaroos. The follow following season, Widnes again lifted the Championsh­ip and Premiershi­p trophies with Offiah crossing for a club record 58 touchdowns. Amongst those was a hat-trick in the 1988/89 Championsh­ip decider against Wigan at a packed Naughton Park.

The following season saw Offiah score twice as Widnes became the first official World Club Champions by beating Australian NRL premiers Canberra Raiders in a never to be forgotten 30-18 win at Old Trafford on October 4 1989.

Having spent four seasons at Widnes, Offiah made a controvers­ial move to Wigan with the Chemics securing a world record transfer fee of £440,000.

The Widnes Hall of Fame currently consists of 13 players (listed below) and 51 year-old Offiah will be officially inducted at a dinner to be held at Halton Stadium on Friday, October 26.
