Tea event expands

-

SURE Start To Later Life will be expanding its tea social event into Widnes in October, following the success of its Runcorn socials.

The project has been running since February on the second Monday of every month at the Grangeway Community Centre in Runcorn, and will be running a one-off event in Widnes with potential for the event to become a more regular fixture. The Widnes tea social will take place on Tuesday, October 2, at the Upton Community Centre where there will be live entertainment and food and drinks served to the table.

A Halton Borough Council spokesman said: “There are places for 100 people, and every effort is made so each event is special, with table decoration and themes throughout the year.

“The first Widnes events is on Tuesday, October 2, from 1pm to 4pm.

“And as it is during Older People’s Week, it will be free!

“There will be afternoon tea, entertainment, ● a free raffle, and a chance to talk to organisations for older people.”

At this time transport is not included so attendees will need to make their own way.

Halton Borough Council’s executive board member for health and wellbeing, Cllr Marie Wright, said: “Everyone is made to feel very welcome, it’s a great way to make new friends, with lots of fun and laughter, singing and if people want to, they can have a dance.”

Previous events in Run- corn have been applauded by those who attended.

One elderly person said: “The get together helps me get my husband away from the TV and gives me a chance to have other people to talk to, I would miss it if it had to stop.”

Another said: “I lost my husband in 2015 and it took me a long time to pull myself together thanks to you this helps.”

One regular said that it gave an opportunity to forge new friendships.

They said: “It stops iso- lation, you make friends and it’s something to look forward to.

“Everyone is very friendly and it is nice to come in have a chat and a little dance!”

Another said: “It had a positive effect on my life – meeting people, getting fresh air, it keeps everything working.”
