A young and inexperienced squad, some swimming in a gala for the first time, performed valiantly.

It was a tough gala with Halton up against serial winners Southport, an ever-improving Crosby and local rivals Prescot.

There were some good performances from the swimmers who managed to gain nine new personal bests between them.

In what was a good team performance at the start of the season it is difficult to single out any individual swimmer but a special mention must go to Sam Hyland, Sam Shurie and Ben Clayton who amassed six first places between them.

The Halton relay teams consisting of J Garner, E Griffiths-Moore, A Maree, H Connolly, C Bivon, S Buckley, J Deane and A McCurry also swam well.

Besides these first place finishes there were also six seconds and seven thirds, helping Halton to stand fourth in the table on 149 points.

Round two takes place on Sunday, September 23 with Halton hoping to improve on this fourth place finish which would see them make the final in a few weeks’ time. ● ●
