Carberry’s assists aid sixth win

-

Runcorn Town 2 Hanley Town 0 RUNCORN TOWN bagged their sixth league victory of the campaign last Wednesday night with a 2-0 triumph over Hanley Town at the Viridor Community Stadium.

The hosts started the game at a rapid pace and it took a brilliant save from Hanley keeper Joseph Mellor to deny Ryan Cox in the opening minute. From the resulting corner, a shot from Liam Turner just eluded Mark Reed, the ball glancing off the outside of the far upright as it ran for a goal-kick.

Following a good run from Turner he found Paul McManus who crossed to Reed who tried a spectacular scissors-kick that flew over the target.

Hanley almost took the lead when Leigh Skellern broke clear but Town No.1 Adam Reid was quickly off his line to deny the striker.

Simon Thelwell then sent Cox through and Mellor saved his side with an excellent stop to beat the ball away.

Leigh Skellern was proving to be a danger and when he crossed the ball low and hard, Reid did really well to dive outwards and hold on to it. The striker then made space and turned on the edge of the penalty area to hammer a shot straight at the Runcorn keeper.

The breakthrough to a very tight game finally arrived on 55 minutes.

A foul on Shaun Weaver led to a free-kick midway into the Hanley half. Thelwell took the free-kick quickly and found Michael Carberry out wide on the left. His low, hard cross resulted in an own goal off Dave Harry slicing the ball as he attempted to clear inside his six-yard area.

Hanley always looked dangerous and threatened to level matters up.

So Runcorn were more than happy to net an insurance goal five minutes from time.

Carberry was once again the provider, his dangerous low cross into the goalmouth finding Cox who turned the ball home from six yards.
