Heatwave meant stay home holidays

-

● A BUDGET hotel chain has reported that only 12% of Halton residents wanted to have a holiday abroad during the summer.

Campanile, which has a branch near Runcorn Station, said 93% of those surveyed said they would like to spend more time exploring the UK in future.

A spokeswoman for the firm said the UK heatwave encouraged two thirds to dismiss the British climate as a reason not to holiday in the UK.

However, more than half were put off because of the cost, with 58% citing finances as a reason not to have a ‘staycation’.

The survey found that 51% of those surveyed still only explore the UK once or twice a year.

The most popular reasons for exploring the UK were: sightseeing (76%), quality time with their significant other (57%) and spending time outdoors (56%).

Scotland, Cornwall, and the Lake District topped the destination wish list.

Mark Aldridge, Campanile UK director of operations, said: “It’s really pleasing to see how many people would like to explore more of the UK if factors such as cost were not an issue.

“Particularly as the good old British weather doesn’t seem to put too many people off, no doubt because of the heatwave we had this year.

“This country has so much to offer with a wide variety of cultures, sights and experiences, it’s time we all looked a little closer to home for our travel needs.”
