Kids adopt core values as term gets under way
AHIGH school in Runcorn has kicked off the academic year with a scheme aimed at instilling core values and preparing pupils for the challenges ahead.
Ormiston Bolingbroke Academy (OBA) said students have been encouraged to embrace the three-Rs ethos of being ‘ready, respectful and resilient’.
Stacey Snagg, OBA director of transition and community development, said OBA wants to provide pupils with the right grounding in order to drive high attendance and punctuality records, develop positive mindsets, nurture courage to do the right thing, and take pride in their school and neighbourhoods.
Year 7 parents were introduced to the initiative at a welcome breakfast and induction ceremony at the start of term.
As part of ‘The OBA Way’, students in Years 7-11 took part in activities dedicated to promoting and embedding crucial values.
Students setting out on their high school journey completed an induction week involving reflection, listening, discussion and problem-solving tasks culminating in a team-building trip involving 200 pupils enjoying a day of sand castle competitions and sporting challenges at Thurstaston Beach in West Kirby.
Year 11 students began their year with a visit from ‘youth empowerment expert’ Action Jackson, who held workshops for whole year groups plus smaller seminars designed to motivate and inspire senior classes.
They heard anecdotes about his journey from childhood to the man he is today, and picked up tips on how to set and achieve goals, be happy and relieve stress.
Action Jackson will be return- ing throughout this academic year to continue to use his passion, energy and humour to equip and empower our students in the preparation of their final exams.
School bosses were reported to be delighted with the visit, which had fostered a ‘can do’ attitude among the teenagers.
Ewan Jago, Year 11 student and Halton’s member of youth parliament, said: “The session with Action Jackson was brilliant.
“He inspired me in every workshop to achieve more and be happy.
“His sessions were full of comedy and motivation, and has had a major impact on my outlook on life.
“He taught me to keep my aspirations high and be the best me.”
Lauren O’Neill, Year 11, said: “Action Jackson was extremely inspirational.
“The topics discussed resonated with me while contemplating my future goals and career options.
“Extremely enjoyable.”
Pauline Stitch, Year 7 leader, said: “It was a pleasure to see how well the students gelled and worked together in teams.
“The innovative lessons the students have received this year as part of their induction on respect and resilience have really contributed to an extremely calm and settled start to their OBA life.”
Gary McIntyre, Year 11 leader, said: “The visit from Action Jackson during the very first week of term was a brilliant way to focus our Year 11s and motivate them for such an important year.
“Lots of the students commented that they felt inspired after his sessions had come away with a real ‘can do’ attitude.” beneficial and ●
