Runcorn’s poor play punished

-

R’corn Linnets Ladies 2 West Kirby Ladies 3 AN IMPRESSIVE run of form by Runcorn Linnets Ladies was brought to an abrupt halt at the Millbank Linnets Stadium on Sunday.

In an abject display, the hosts were defeated 3-2 in the Cheshire Women’s League Premier Division with West Kirby Ladies showing more determination and passion.

The visitors were the better side tactically and superior to the home side in every department. ●

One had to feel for Runcorn manager John Pickering and his coaching team whose ambitions were not matched by his players in this particular game.

On the plus side, Runcorn, who were without both regular goalkeepers Megan Pickering and Rebecca Durr, unearthed another candidate for the position in midfielder Lynsey Hopley, who had an excellent game between the sticks.

Linnets’ goals came from Marcia JonesSacharewicz in the 39th minute and Lile Ashley seven minutes from time.

West Kirby’s goals in the 32nd, 66th and 69th minutes included two penalties.

Manager Pickering has told his players in no uncertain terms that they owe him and themselves a big performance. He will welcome back Megan Pickering and Jo Finnegan while hopefully adding Demi Lee Rogers, absent through illness on Sunday, and Kayleigh Crompton to the squad for this Sunday’s important game, also in the league, at Stockport County Ladies Development.
