Buses in collision

● THREE casualties were taken to hospital after a collision involving two buses in Runcorn on Friday.

The crash happened on the busway through Halton Lodge near the junction with Grangeway and close to two bus stops at around 3.15pm.

It occurred about 100 metres from St Chad’s Catholic And Church Of England High School as it was breaking up for half-term. Two Halton Transport buses were involved and one driver had to be freed by firefighters from his cabin.

Cheshire Fire And Rescue Service reported that a number of passengers suffered minor injuries.

Three casualties were taken to hospital although their injuries were not believed to be serious. Heading to the scene along Halton Lodge Avenue, the Weekly News saw the police cordon open to allow three ambulances to leave the area. A fourth remained on Grangeway near the collision spot.

One of the buses had damage to the front end while a rear panel and section of the bottom right hand side of the back of the other bus was missing, with scratches and ripped metal up along the right rear edge to the top. A Hough Green Garage towing trucked had been connected to one of the buses to remove around 4.50pm.

The other left under its own power.

On Friday, a Halton Transport spokesman said the firm was not in a position to provide ‘any details at the moment’, and maintained that position on Monday.

One bystander at the scene said a girl who had been on the bus said her head had been ‘thrown forward’ by the impact.

She had seen an elderly woman taken away by an ambulance and another woman was also taken away.

A crowd of mainly schoolchildren were gathered at the crash scene watching the emergency response. it at FREE ERYON DELIVORDE RS ALL OVER
